Barwick, Georgia
History

Barwick, a thriving agricultural center in Northeast Thomas County was formed in 1891 with the building of the Georgia Northern Railroad.

The town lies across the line dividing Brooks County from Thomas County.

The town has a population of just over 400 people according to the 2004 Census.  Agri-business stimulates the economy with the latest methods in farming the fertile land.  The center has the convenience of its own bank and several blocks of retail stores along Main Street.

Land on which Barwick lies was part of the plantation owned by T. M. and John Massey.  The former owned land in Brooks County while John Massey´s property was in Thomas.

T.M. Massey land was subdivided and streets laid out on the east side of the railroad; later, as the town grew, land west of the railroad was needed, and John Massey provided that.

The late Dr. S.E. Sanchez who first practiced medicine in Thomasville later opened the well-known Sanchez clinic in Barwick.

The first school, Harmony Academy, existed even before the town was formed.  In 1907 a new and larger school was built.  This school was followed by the Barwick High School that was the first accredited school in the county system as well as the first to be built of brick.

Harmony Academy received its name from nearby Harmony Primitive Baptist Church that was organized in the 1840´s.  The church and cemetery lay about a mile east of Barwick on the Quitman Road.

A Methodist church and a Missionary Baptist church were formed much later than Harmony church but saw a growth that paralleled that of the town itself.

Barwick had three produce packing houses, handling a large amount of vegetables each year.  With the expansion of the Thomas County Market in Thomasville, these facilities gave way to the present Georgia State Market that holds auctions all during the growing seasons.

Brokers from throughout the United States bid on quality agricultural production with a sizeable amount being grown in the Barwick area of Thomas County.

Storage and farm supply facilities dominate the business enterprises that serve the community in which diversified agriculture has been practiced successfully for over eighty years.

Modern equipment and attractive homes are evidence that good management practices have made Barwick one of the most productive points in Thomas County.
